A camera alone does not make a picture. To make a picture you need a camera, a photographer and above all a subject. It is the subject that determines the interest of the photograph.

Rule of Thirds Photos

I was pleased with your photographs for our first field assignment.  Overall you were able to demonstrate an apt knowledge of the Rule of Thirds.  In the picture to the right, Ashley gives us a very good example of what we are looking for in this assignment.  You can click on the “Rule of Thirds” link below to look at your photographs and those of your classmates.

Welcome to the CSHM Photo Blog

Welcome, class, to the CSHM Photography blog.  I post on this site to you as often as I can find the time.  Here you will see the following:

  • Quotes and Photographs that I find interesting.
  • Assignments for our class.
  • Video tutorials or assignments that I have prepared for you if I am away from class for some reason doing Principal stuff.
  • Photographs that you have taken that I want to share with the class and anyone else who is interested.
  • Photographs that I have taken that I want to share with you.
  • Links to sites I would like you to visit.
  • Anything else I can think of that you should know about…usually concerning photography.

This class is total immersion photography.  There is nothing like it in any high school I know of.  We cover the history of photography in detail from Camera Obscura to state-of-the-art digital imaging and everything in between.  By studying their lives, methods and photographs, we will examine and analyze the great photographers of historic and contemporaneous art.   We will visit museums and galleries to experience their work first hand.

We will cover composition and all aspects of image capture including portraiture, landscape, sports, fine art and other realms of photography.  You will become proficient with a Single Lens Reflex camera, able to use it quickly on any setting to enhance your ability capture your intended image before it is lost. You will likely never set a quality camera on “automatic” again.  You will master photographic workflow using Lightroom 2.4 and Photoshop CS4.  This class also fulfills the UC requirements for one year of Fine Arts.

These are all important things.  But for me, I want to see you become a connoisseur of the fine art of photography and the great photographers.  It will be a gift you will carry with you through life and extend to other areas of art as well.  You have to know and appreciate good photography to become a good photographer.  The quality of your photographs is dependent on your creativity, vision, and skill, not the quality or complexity of your camera.  It has been said that 90% of all cameras are better than 90% of all photographers.  Be one of the 10% (of photographers, that is).

So, that’s the journey we are taking together this year.  I enjoy this class as much as anything I do.  I hope you do as well.
